Fact Sheet

WHO IS USING YOUR CHILD’S IDENTITY?

Children Are Prime Targets of Identity Thieves

  • An investigation by state and federal authorities “uncovered an alarming new crime spree involving illegal aliens and identities stolen from victims under the age of 12.” (Utah Attorney General,  Press Release - July, 2005, http://attorneygeneral.utah.gov/PrRel/prjuly152005.htm

    • In 2005, a limited sample revealed that 1,800-2,000 Utah children under the age of 12 had their Social Security Numbers (SSNs) being used by someone else.

    • 37 adults were found to be using just one child’s SSN.  (Source:  Utah Workforce Services)

    • 1,626 companies were paying salaries to the SSNs of Utah children under 12 years old.  (Source:  Utah Workforce Services)

Is There a Way to Stop Child Identity Theft?

  • According to Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, “Employers can help [prevent identity theft] by being more vigilant during the hiring process and verifying an applicant's Social Security number.” www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4188/is_20050716/ai_n14785381  and Assistant Attorney General Richard Hamp told a Utah House of Representatives legislative committee that employment verification would go a long way toward curbing identity theft.  www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4188/is_20060210/ai_n16064166
  • Employment verification would limit Social Security Number Only Identity Theft which accounts for most child identity theft.  It would also help prevent sexual predators from using stolen Social Security numbers to hide their true identities so they can get close to our children.

  • Unfortunately, only a handful of Utah businesses verify Social Security numbers.  In addition, our elected officials, at all levels, allow taxpayer funds to be used to hire individuals using our children’s stolen identities or to employ sexual predators and other criminals using stolen identities.

What Can We Do to Help Protect Our Children from identity theft?
